Fiesta’s farewell ascension canceled

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Gusty conditions early Sunday at Balloon Fiesta Park forced the delay and eventual cancellation of the Balloon Fiesta’s final mass ascension of the year.

Windy weather also prevented balloons from going up during the daily dawn patrol.

Early Sunday, Fiesta officials made the call to delay the mass ascension until 7:30 a.m. However, the decision not to fly came right around 6:20 a.m.

Parking was free to all comers on the cold, windy Sunday morning. Admission was also free after officials announced the cancellation.

Many still stuck around to grab some breakfast and last minute balloon themed souvenirs.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta won’t see another mass ascension until next year.
