SANTA FE (AP) - Public schools around New Mexico will get a crack at part of $10 million in federal stimulus funds to develop photovoltaic or solar electric systems.
The money will be used for 100-kilowatt photovoltaic energy systems in up to 20 schools.
Officials say the systems will save money on electricity, stimulate green energy jobs in communities and support clean energy education in New Mexico's public schools.
The funds will be awarded through a competitive process open to all school districts.
The program was announced Wednesday by Gov. Bill Richardson, who was joined by Education Secretary Veronica Garcia; Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Secretary Joanna Prukop; and former governor Toney Anaya.
