ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) - Some New Mexico families were in for a surprise when they saw a swarm of cops at their door, only to find out no one was in trouble. It was just State Police spreading some holiday cheer.

State Police dispatch for District Three in Roswell spent Saturday organizing and wrapping presents between calls. Their squad room was stacked with gifts.

"They stepped up, they donated food, presents, and it was my staff throughout my district to include the agents and the investigators," explained State Police Captain, Dina Orozco. "I mean, the whole district came together for this event, it was really nice to see."

Police in District Three sponsored two families in need found through local schools. They loaded piles of presents, and filled cars with goodies.

The first family was in for a surprise, when they saw a swarm of cops standing outside.

"I thought something bad was going to happen," said Alyza Montaño, 14.

But the mood quickly shifted when the family of five saw investigators in Santa hats, armed with gifts. Holiday greetings were exchanged, as policeman handed out candy canes to kids.

"It made me feel like I was like, real special," said Montaño.

And officers weren't finished. The State Police Santa, dubbed, "Stater Clause," made another stop.

When the mom at the next home opened her door to find a group of officers bearing presents, she was in shock. She choked up, mustering the words, "this is so cool." She stood by, as a line of police officers loaded her home with boxes and boxes of food and goodies for her sons.

"Overwhelmed with appreciation," said Christine Sipes, when asked how she felt.

Sipes said she and her family were forced to move unexpectedly, and they didn't have presents under the tree until now, making Christmas just a little bit sweeter.

"Thank you is, I know it's just little words, but it comes from my heart," said Sipes. "I speak blessing on every person that did it, I hope it comes back to them."

State Police throughout New Mexico were involved in similar projects to help children and families in need this year. The Captain in Roswell said she'd like to make this a tradition, and help even more families next year.
