ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The state legislature pushing for a bill that would not allow your kids to move on from third to fourth grade if they can't read at the right level. So what can you do to make sure your kids read well?

Teachers say learning to read well to starts well before third grade. Elisa Mesta's and her first grade class at Valle Vista Elementary School in Albuquerque give tips on how to help kids read.

She says the biggest challenge of teaching kids to read is how they're on different levels, some kids get a lot of help at home and others don't.

Mrs. Mesta works with those differences by splitting the kids up into different groups based on their reading-levels.

Just about everyday the kids get one-on-one time with their teacher and they read individually, work on words and listen to stories being read from a computer.

Mrs. Mesta can do a lot in the classroom, but she says learning to read starts at home. She says parents should expose children to reading early and do it often.

Parents should read to their children and have their children read to them. They should also limit how much time their kids spend in front of the TV. That way they're more likely to pick up books instead.

Mrs. Mesta also says use the library it's a free resource with many different kids of books to help peak children's interests.
