MIMBRES, N.M. (KRQE) - A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with an open count of murder after telling investigators he accidentally shot his father during a hunting trip.
Grant County sheriff's deputies were called Sunday evening to the McKnight Canyon area at 3544 State Road 35 near Mimbres.
The son said he and his father were hunting when he accidentally pulled the trigger. The teen then told investigators he left his father in the canyon to call for help.
Police began searching the area where the son said the incident took place. As of Monday morning, investigators were not able to locate the father's body.
Deputies are not releasing names.
The canyon is located in the Gila National Forest, about 33 miles northeast of Silver City.
