Is weight loss surgery right for me?
The Criteria
What does it take to qualify as a Bariatric surgery candidate? If you meet the following criteria, treatment may be a possibility for you:
100 pounds or more over your ideal body weight
A Body Mass Index (BMI)* of 40kg/m2 or 35-39.9 with co-morbidities
Failure at previous weight loss attempts
Limitations in daily activities, such as performing job duties and caring for your family
*The BMI correlates with the amount of fat in a person’s body; a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight, 30 or higher is considered obese. Find out your BMI by using our Body Mass Calculator >
Please note that you must be prepared to make substantial changes in eating habits and lifestyle. If you meet the criteria and would benefit from bariatric surgery, please contact us.
OUR PROCEDURES
The Surgical Procedures
Surgical treatment is the only proven method of achieving long term weight control for the morbidly obese. Las Palmas Medical Center offers the following weight loss procedures: Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding and Laparoscopic or Open Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery. The laparoscopic approach utilizes multiple small incisions instead of a larger midline incision. Data shows that the laparoscopic technique results in less pain, a shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery for most patients. Because bariatric surgery is a medical necessity (not cosmetic), insurance companies may cover expenses.
The Benefits
Sufficient weight loss can significantly improve health, reduce the risk of developing obesity associated medical conditions, and enhance the quality of life. Bariatric surgery has shown remarkable improvements to patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, high cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea, stress urinary incontinence, coronary artery disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease, depression, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and degenerative joint disease.
