Here are some ways to protect your valuables:

1. Take digital pictures (closeups) of all jewelry and valuables.

2. Inscribe a number or letter code someplace on each piece of jewelry. Record it and include it with #3.

3. Make a detailed list with Photos of all jewelry (in a digital format).

4. Get the email addresses of jewelry buyers so you can quickly email your digital photos in case of theft.

5. Install a good alarm system.

6. Install a camera system.

7. Get creative about hiding your jewelry at home.

8. Install a floor safe in a secret location. Don't let anyone (especially children) know you have a safe. Alternatively, get a safe deposit box,

9. Don't leave any valuables out in your home while having guests or parties.  Lock them in your safe.

10. Don't have workers or anyone at your home when you are not present.

11. Don't flaunt jewelry. In some public places, turn your diamond ring around to face the palm side of your hand.

12. Be extra careful at airport security checks. Watch your plastic tub.

Take these steps now, while your jewelry is in your possession. People typically wish they had taken these steps after a theft. They never thought it would happen to them. Having this information available the minute you discover the theft lets you contact dealers immediately without having to give a description over the phone (when the dealer is probably busy helping a customer and doesn't have time to talk to you).

If you are the victim of a robbery, be proactive. Contact pawn shops, consignment stores and all precious metals buyers yourself with a list of your valuables – even better, email a digital format with the pictures. The police don’t always have the time or manpower to search for your property as thoroughly as you would.
