Nancy Laflin, KRQE News 13
Nancy Laflin, KRQE News 13
I was going to begin this biography very formally and “business-like" – but then a former colleague recently asked why and how I could cover some of the stories that made “news”.
My answer is this: television news is a front-row seat to life; all of it, the good, the bad and the unimaginable.
From interviewing presidents, to flying with the Blue Angels, or standing in a blizzard with snow and ice hanging from my head – it’s all part of the job.
I believe it’s a privilege when someone lets you into their home to tell their story and every once in a while, something good comes of it, sometimes publicly, sometimes privately, quietly.
Because it’s my job to write about people and their lives – I wanted to share a bit of mine. Now here’s the “business” part….
Nancy Laflin is a reporter at KRQE News 13 and 2 KASA Fox in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has also worked as a reporter/anchor at KENS-TV in San Antonio, Texas and KIII-TV in Corpus Christi, Texas.
For her work in television, she was honored by the New Mexico Associated Press, the New Mexico Broadcasters Association and the Texas Associated Press for her coverage of breaking news. Other honors include being featured in a New York Times article after being one of the few reporters in the country to score one-on-one interviews with then-presidential candidates Al Gore and George W. Bush. Nancy has done live reporting for CNN, the Weather Channel, ABC News radio, ABC News Now and the Geraldo Rivera Show.
From 2005-10, she was tapped to head the New Mexico Music Commission. Nancy used her broadcasting background to co-host a radio show and produced a television series promoting music and tourism. The television show received a Telly Award for content and production. She also wrote and co-produced a documentary about musicians who recorded in the historic Norman Petty Studios. The documentary aired on PBS stations throughout the state and was twice used as a fundraiser for Public Television. In addition to producing and directing, she voiced another PBS documentary called “Desert Reef” that aired nationally and won a Rocky Mountain Emmy Award in 2010.
As commission director, she partnered with the Los Angeles Chapter of the Recording Academy to host music-in-film summits with executives from Universal, Disney, Fox, and Paramount Studios who educated New Mexicans about film music.
In addition to television news, her other passion is singing. She made a CD with other New Mexico musicians for a New Mexico charity, and has performed the national anthem for the NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs, the Houston Astros, and at multiple charitable and sporting events in New Mexico. Nancy has also received a Texas ADDY award for advertising excellence for singing in a music video for a charity.
Nancy Laflin is a graduate of Eldorado High School and the University of New Mexico. While a student at UNM, she received the Dean of Students Outstanding Achievement for Service Award for her many collegiate community activities.
