I earned a bachelor's degree at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, while working for the public television station, KENW-TV. The university is one of the few in the nation to offer its broadcast student’s real-life, hands-on experience in broadcast news. We prepared and broadcast a 30-minute news program over the air on channel 3 every night.

I had earned my pilot's license in high school and always felt that combining my flying skills with training as a journalist would provide a rich career full of travel and new experiences. I have not been disappointed.

Each week, we use our Skyranger helicopter to travel the entire southwest from Hobbs and Carlsbad to Raton, Farmington and Gallup. We even cover southern Colorado, eastern Arizona and southeastern Utah. The beauty and wonder of our part of America is inspiring.

I have also been fortunate enough to also travel the world on behalf of KRQE News 13. I was given the great privilege and honor of accompanying New Mexico troops into some of the many conflicts they have fought and are still fighting on our behalf. Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Panama and other hot spots are just some of the places I have traveled. Following in the spirit of the great combat correspondent Ernie Pyle (who lived in Albuquerque a while) I have worked hard to tell the stories of our troops. Over a year of my life has been spent overseas with these troops, and I consider that work to be my most rewarding.

It has also been inspiring to cover the work of great New Mexico scientists and adventurers -- covering expeditions to Antarctica, Egypt, the Himalayas and Central America.

No matter where I roam covering New Mexico stories...there is no place like home, here in the Land of Enchantment.
